چکیده

Microdata concerning consumer demand typically show considerable variation in real expenditures, but very little variation in prices. We propose a semiparametric strategy for the consumer demand problem in which expenditure share equations are estimated Pendakur gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada through its standard research grant program, while Sperlich acknowledges the support of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft FOR916. Both authors thank Emmanuel Guerre and the participants of the 2004 CAM/Cemmap Workshop on “Nonparametric Methods under Behavioural Restrictions”, and in particular, Arthur Lewbel and Enno Mammen, for helpful discussion.

Semiparametric Estimation and Consumer Demand

This paper considers the implementation of semiparametric methods in the empirical analysis of consumer demand. The application is to the estimation of the Engel curve relationship and uses the British Family Expenditure Survey. Household composition is modelled using an extended partially linear framework. This is shown to provide a useful method for pooling non-parametric Engel curves across ...

The impact of rice imports on domestic consumer welfare using the inverse demand system

Rice is the second strategic product after wheat and one of the most widely consumed food products in the country. Population growth, consumption and growing demand, price fluctuations and welfare effects due to changes in the amount and price of rice require the attention and planning and foresight of policymakers and the countrychr('39')s planning system. In this study, in the framework of in...

Estimation of Theorectically Plausible Demand Functions from U.S. Consumer Expenditure Survey Data

Estimation of Theoretically Plausible Demand Functions From U. S. Consumer Expenditure Survey Data Lester D. Taylor University of Arizona The purpose of this paper is the application of four popular theoretically plausible consumer demand systems to a common cross-sectional data set that combines expenditure data from the quarterly BLS consumer expenditure surveys with price data that are colle...

Semiparametric Estimation of Lifetime Equivalence Scales

Pashardes (1991) and Banks, Blundell and Preston (1994) use parametric methods to estimate lifetime equivalence scales. Their approaches put parametric restrictions on the differences in within-period expenditure needs across household types, the intertemporal allocation of expenditure, and the shapes of commodity demand equations. This paper puts parametric structure only on the differences in...

Semiparametric indirect utility and consumer demand

A semiparametric model of consumer demand is considered. In the model, the indirect utility function is specified as a partially linear, where utility is nonparametric in expenditure and parametric (with fixedor varying-coefficients) in prices. Because the starting point is a model of indirect utility, rationality restrictions like homogeneity and Slutsky symmetry are easily imposed. The result...
